We love travel, we love music, and we love festivals.  What better excuse to go abroad than to see your favourite artists and enjoy some music festival fun in a beautiful foreign country.

Listed in date order, here’s our round up of some of the best music festivals around the world in 2016 that are a little unique and/or set in stunning scenery.

Spain | Primavera | 1st – 5th June

Portishead_Primavera_Sound

Located in Barcelona pretty much on the coast, Primavera always has a great line up featuring established superstars such as Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds, Air, Animal Collective, Dinosaur Jr, Mudhoney, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, plus many up and coming artists.

USA | Governors Ball | 3rd – 5th June

This smaller US festival is so cool, it might be too cool for school, but another great line up this year including The Strokes, The Killers, Beck, Haim, De La Soul, Jamie XX, Eagles of Death Metal and more gets all the hip kids to Randall’s Island, NYC.

Bulgaria | Meadows in the Mountains | 10th – 13th June

Set in the gorgeous Rhodopes Mountains of Bulgaria, listen to great DJs, stay in traditional Bulgarian mountain huts, and enjoy the beach party.

Denmark | Roskilde Festival | 25th June – 2nd July

Roskilde

There are loads of tents spanning many genres of music in the 2nd largest music festival in Europe.  Despite it’s size there is a great leftfield feel to the festival, with lots of art and activities going on.  Plus all profits go towards humanitarian and cultural charities around the world.

Portugal | NOS Alive | 7th – 9th July

Optimus_Alive

Previously called Optimus Alive, NOS Alive is set in Lisbon minutes from the beautiful city centre and minutes from the beach.  It could be described as a smaller version of Primavera that gets equally good artists such as Radiohead, Arcade Fire, The Pixies, and The Chemical Brothers this year.  When it gets too hot the sea winds can help cool you down.

England | Latitude | 14th – 17th July

Latitude_FestivalLocated in the greenery of Suffolk, Latitude might just be Glastonbury’s cooler cousin. It’s a big festival but it’s eco-friendly and family friendly with a kids and inbetweeners area.  Music lovers can catch Of Monsters and Men, The Maccabees, The National and New Order.

Romania | Electric Castle Festival | 14th – 17th July

Ever wanted to see Skillrex in a 14th century Transylvanian castle?  Well head to the Electric Castle Festival where you’ll experience an eclectic music line up, great scenery and lots of diverse food.

England | Lovebox | 15th – 16th July

Lovebox maybe my favourite festival in the centre of London, and this year LCD Soundsystem are blessing us with their presence headlining on Saturday at Victoria Park.

England | Secret Garden Party | 21st – 24th July

Big but still boutique, each year there is a theme which all festival goers get into and dress up for.  This year the theme for the festival set in the English countryside is Gardeners Guide to the Galaxy.  Anyone for Caribou, Air and Primal Scream on the same line-up?

Japan | Fuji Rock Festival | 22nd – 24th July

Fuji_Rock_Festival

10 stages in the forests of Naeba Ski Resort host world class bands, a festival area so spacious that you can ride the Dragondola cable car to reach two more stages and get a great view of the festival.

Croatia | Soundwave Festival | 4th – 8th August

Set on a beach front in Tisno, Soundwave is a great summer festival to go to.  Don’t forget about the numerous party boats and after-parties playing all sorts from hip hop, to acid jazz, to soul, to reggae.

Hungary | Sziget | 10 – 17th August

It’s one of the biggest festivals in Europe and held in Budapest, but there is still a great sense of freedom at this festival that was originally a low-profile student event.   Set on a leafy 266 acre island on the Danube river you may never have felt so free along with 400,000 other revellers on the island.

USA | Burning Man | 24th August – 5th September

Burning_Man_Coyote

It may not be the same as it once was, but Burning Man still evokes craziness in the middle of the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.  Promoting music, community and art (this year’s theme is Da Vinci’s workshop), this temporary metropolis is one that music lovers should experience.  Just remember to stock up on water.

Croatia | Outlook Festival | 1st – 4th September

Party in a Roman amphitheatre to underground dance music, or on boats, and experience some amazing soundsystems.

England | Bestival | 8th – 11th September

Bestival

A brilliantly eclectic festival by Mr Rob da Bank with a stellar line up of The Cure, Hot Chip, Diplo, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Animal Collective and more.  It’s not just about the music though with a carnival parade, a circus, and lots of art installations.

At what music festival will you listen to great music in 2016?

  1. Definitely tough to narrow the worldwide list down, but this is a great list. There are so many music festivals in the US alone, it was awesome to read about what goes on around the rest of the world!
